Diabetes – A Growing Concern among Children

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” – Hippocrates

The COVID-19 outbreak brought with it a whole lot of changes for the mankind. To curb the spread of the virus, a lot of restrictions had to be imposed. The worst-hit were the children who have had no option but to stay put indoors. General activities like going out, running around, sweating it out, and coming home tired didn’t seem to be happening anytime soon for the kids. As such, the only pastime for the little ones has been nothing more than eating, watching TV, and sleeping.

Even though it might not seem like a big deal at first, many children began complaining of weight gain issues and fell into the trap of obesity. Now, we all know that obesity attracts health woes such as diabetes. If you have been ruling out diabetes as a health condition that only adults can acquire after a certain age, then it’s time to burst the bubble. Research suggests that children in the age of 10 to 19 years face high risk to diabetes.

As such, the need of the hour is to encourage children to adopt a healthy lifestyle so that they do not end up contracting diabetes or any other lifestyle-based diseases, for that matter.

So today, we, at The Navyandhra School, one of the best schools in Gurugram, will shed light on the health condition we all know as diabetes, what are the most common causes for diabetes in children, and how it can be prevented. Read on.

What is diabetes?

As you may know, our body needs energy, which comes from the food we eat. The food that we consume contains glucose, which is a vital blood sugar.

Our body produces a hormone known as insulin, which assists our bodies in using this glucose. People, who are unable to produce insulin or the insulin present in the body, are unable to utilize glucose from the blood, and this condition is known as diabetes.

Diabetes is basically of two types:

  • Type I Diabetes: In this case, the immune system attacks the pancreas to an extent wherein the cells stop producing insulin.

  • Type II Diabetes: Here, the pancreas is capable of producing insulin, but the latter fails to work as desired in the person’s body.

What causes diabetes in children?

  • Being overweight:

Children who are overweight have a high presence of fatty tissues in their bodies. If such tissues gather around the abdomen, the cells in the child’s body become insulin-resistant, ultimately leading to diabetes.

As one of the best schools in Gurugram, we, at The Navyandhra School, always encourage our pupils to keep their weight under check by persuading them to eat healthily and stay active. We conduct on-campus medical checks at regular intervals for our students.

  • Genetic factors:

Children who have a family history of diabetes are more likely to develop this condition. However, there is always an exception to every case, which is why taking preventive measures is helpful.

  • Physical inactiveness:

Children who prefer a sedentary lifestyle are more likely to be detected with diabetes. This is why it is very important that children get enough physical exposure in the form of sports and other physical activities. The kids who remain physically active generally remain protected against health woes such as diabetes.

Symptoms of diabetes in children:

If you spot any of the following symptoms in your child, you must get a blood sugar test done:

  • Feeling constantly thirsty
  • Constant urge to urinate
  • Feeling of exhaustion
  • Blurred vision
  • Darkened skin
  • Weight loss

How can you prevent the occurrence of diabetes in children?

  • Focus on balanced diet:

Make sure your child consumes low-fat and high-nutrient foods. Your child’s meals should contain whole-grain cereals, fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. Such a diet will help in keeping your child’s weight under check.

  • Say no to “sugary foods”:

We understand that children’s attraction to sugary foods and beverages is next level. However, one of the first steps towards battling the occurrence of diabetes is to eliminate sodas, juices, and candies from a child’s consumption chart.

  • Staying active:

Give your children enough reasons to stay active. Even though it is not always possible for them to go out and play a sport, make them do home chores that require effort. Similarly, send them to pick up a grocery item from a nearby store, which is a great means of pulling in a quick stroll.

Let us give a “collective fight” to diabetes

Every health condition is physically and mentally painful, and diabetes is no exception to it. Hence, an ideal way out is to look for preventive measures over curative ones.

While it is important to back your children into eating healthy and staying physically active, it is equally helpful to get routine med-checks done. Many a time, it is during these checks that the pre-diabetes stage is detected. As soon as such a result comes out, you can start taking action in the interest of your children.

In such a scenario, some of the things to implement immediately include portion control, cutting down on carbs and sugary foods, turning to more fiber-rich alternatives, and most importantly, staying well hydrated at all times.

We, at The Navyandhra School, positioned among the best schools in Gurugram, firmly believe that the best way to keep lifestyle diseases like diabetes at bay is to opt for health over comfort. When the key focus remains on maintaining good health, lifestyle diseases naturally stay away from knocking on the door.

Moreover, it has been seen that whenever a health condition stands in our face uninformed, we are more likely to lose track of the action that needs to be taken. To prevent you from finding yourself in a sport in such a scenario, it is crucial that you have the necessary know-how to fight off any such situation if at all it arises.

So, from now onwards, hold on to the mantra of eating well, staying active, and most importantly, staying informed, and you can definitely bid goodbye to all the unwanted health woes.
