“What makes a child gifted and talented may not always be good grades in school, but a different way of learning and looking at the world!”- Chuck Grassley
Do you know what the outcome of rote learning, repetitive lessons, and routine lectures is? Well, all these things, when clubbed together, give rise to not-so-pleasing and mundane learning experiences. As you can guess, such a kind of learning is definitely not something that any of us would look forward to. Is it fair then to expect our young ones to stay engaged in such an uninteresting learning process?
Jean Piaget, a pioneer in the field of child psychology, believed that in order to reach deep into the root of the cited issue, one must look from a child’s perspective. He explained further that as children get comparatively more inclined towards pleasing, fun, unique, and creative ways, the learning outcomes are generally better when the learning process comprises fun ways of teaching. Knowledge attainment becomes memorable and long-lasting only when children find interest in the learning process. This is what we, at The Navyandhra School, positioned among the top 5 schools in Gurgaon, believe as well as follow on our premises.
We strongly believe that gone are the days when the only method to learn novel concepts for the students was rote learning. Today’s learning mechanism has evolved by leaps and bounds, and so do the learning methods. We strongly feel that in order to establish academic concepts as well as life-long values in young minds, several off-beat techniques must be applied from the very beginning, right during the preschool years. At The Navyandhra School, we always strive to make our pupils learn through pleasing and memorable avant-garde approaches and would highly recommend the same to our esteemed parents as well.
Here, we have a few such techniques that you can try and adopt at home to make the learning experiences of your little ones fun and memorable. Read on.
Teaching kids about the mathematics concept of greater than and smaller than using this technique is a no-brainer! The method involves teaching kids that the ‘greater than’ sign looks like the open mouth of an alligator while the ‘smaller than’ sign is the closed mouth of an alligator. This interesting method makes children memorize the mentioned concept with utter ease.
Taking the help of The Pizza Circle has always been effective for teaching children about small spellings and two-digit numbers. For instance, if you want to teach the spelling of ‘one’ to your child, write ‘on’ on a slice cut out from the pizza made of cardboard or chart sheet, and the remaining spelling ‘e’ on another slice of pizza. Now what you need to do is ask the children to form the correct spelling of ‘one’ by joining the two slices of ‘on’ and ‘e.’
Similarly, children can understand the concept of One’s and Ten’s two-digit numbers like 10, 11, till 99 by joining one slice of pizza with the one’s digit (i.e., 0 from 10) and another slice of pizza with the ten’s digit (i.e.,1 from 10) written on it.
Draw colorful fishes on a chart paper in the increasing order of the bubbles blown out of their mouths from left to right. The first fish with one bubble, the second blowing out two, and so on. With this technique, young students can effortlessly learn about counting.
Learning about rhyming words becomes a cakewalk for children with this technique. You just need to write and color many sets of rhyming words on a big size chart, keeping in mind to give the ‘same color’ to two rhyming words. Children will then easily locate the rhyming words by matching the same-colored words and will thus get to know multiple sets of rhyming words.
